A Masaka court has granted National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, security team members Eddie Mutwe, Gaddafi Mugumya and Grace Wakabi, alias Smart, cash bail of Shs20 million in their ongoing aggravated robbery case.

The bail was granted on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, following lengthy arguments by the defence team.

Mutwe, whose real name is Edward Ssebuufu, and his co-accused are facing charges arising from an incident during a burial in Manja village, Kissekka Sub-county in Lwengo District, in May 2024.

Prosecution alleges that the three and their co-accused assaulted journalists who were covering the burial, damaged their equipment and stole property. The accused have denied the allegations, with their lawyers maintaining that the prosecution is politically motivated.

The latest bail ruling comes after an earlier attempt by the accused to secure temporary freedom was unsuccessful.

On August 22, 2025, the Masaka High Court rejected bail applications filed by Mutwe, Mugumya, Wakabi and their co-accused, Achilleo Kivumbi. Justice Fatuma Nanziri Bwanika instead directed that the case be prepared for trial.

The defence had argued that the accused had spent considerable time on remand and should benefit from the presumption of innocence. Following the earlier ruling, lead defence lawyer Samuel Muyizzi said the team would push for a speedy trial and consider another bail application if proceedings continued to delay.

The latest decision has now opened a new chapter in the long-running case involving members of Bobi Wine’s security detail.

However, details surrounding the bail remain limited. The update does not clarify whether the Shs20 million cash bail applies to each of the three accused persons individually or collectively.

It also does not state the additional bail conditions imposed by court or confirm whether Mutwe, Mugumya and Wakabi have already been released from custody.

The position of their co-accused, Achilleo Kivumbi, was also not immediately clarified.

The case remains before the Masaka courts as the accused continue to contest the allegations against them.
