Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a 13-year journey with the national team.
The defensive midfielder confirmed his decision on Monday, October 12, 2026, ending a career that saw him become one of Uganda’s key figures in midfield and a respected leader in the national team setup.
Born on August 8, 1993, in Jinja, Aucho made his Uganda Cranes debut in November 2013 during the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup against Rwanda.
He went on to play a significant role in Uganda’s return to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2017, ending a 39-year absence from the continental tournament. He later represented the country at the 2019 and 2025 AFCON editions.
Aucho was appointed Uganda Cranes captain in October 2021, a responsibility that further cemented his place in the team. His defensive work, experience and leadership made him an important figure for the national side over the years.
At club level, he featured for several teams across Africa, Asia and Europe, including Gor Mahia, Baroka FC, Red Star Belgrade and Young Africans of Tanzania.
In his retirement message, Aucho thanked the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), his coaches, teammates and fans for supporting him throughout his international career. He also urged younger players to take responsibility for carrying Uganda’s flag forward.
His departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the Uganda Cranes, with the team now facing the task of moving forward without a midfielder who served the national colours for more than a decade.
