Retired UPDF General Peter Elwelu has delivered a pointed message about age, wisdom and experience in a video circulating on social media, drawing fresh attention amid growing tensions surrounding his reported confrontation with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
In the video, Elwelu appears to caution younger leaders against allowing academic qualifications, authority or their current positions to make them believe they have experienced everything life has to offer.
Using an analogy about age and perspective, the retired general said an older person seated under a tree could see farther than a young person sitting on top of it.
“An old man seated under a tree sees farther than a young man seated on top of the tree. That is important. Where you are sitting today as a young man, that old man was also seated there,” Elwelu remarked.
He went on to question why some young people with degrees and master’s qualifications assume they have already achieved everything, instead of seeking guidance from those who have travelled the same path before them.
“When you have got education, some young people think you have arrived. You have a degree, a master’s and everything, and you think you have arrived, yet you have not,” he added.
Although Elwelu did not directly name Muhoozi in the quoted remarks, the video has attracted attention because of the reported security developments involving the two former military colleagues.
Muhoozi, who currently serves as UPDF Chief of Defence Forces, has reportedly instructed soldiers searching for Elwelu to capture him alive, saying he wanted to have a personal conversation with the retired general.
The search has reportedly involved the recovery of additional firearms and ammunition from locations linked to Elwelu in the Teso sub-region. Reports have also emerged of the arrest of his driver and the seizure of a vehicle.
Meanwhile, allegations of arms stockpiling, treachery and attempts to mobilise a rebel group have continued to circulate, alongside reports that more than 20 former soldiers allegedly linked to Elwelu have been arrested.
Muhoozi has also reportedly announced Elwelu’s demotion to the rank of private and issued surrender ultimatums as the search continues.
However, several of the allegations and reported security developments have not been independently verified.
Elwelu’s latest remarks have added another layer to an already tense situation, with his message placing the spotlight on the value of experience, patience and learning from those who came before.
For now, questions remain about the retired general’s whereabouts and what could happen next as the reported standoff continues.
