ONC Marks President Museveni’s 82nd Birthday with Prayers and Tributes to Liberation Heroes

Well-wishers, religious leaders, surviving veterans and families of fallen fighters gathered today at the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) headquarters in Kyambogo to mark President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s 82nd birthday.

The low-key but meaningful ceremony, organised by the ONC under Senior Presidential Advisor and ONC Manager Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo, combined birthday celebrations with a special prayer service and tribute to those who sacrificed during Uganda’s liberation struggle. Namyalo had announced the event the previous day, describing it as a deliberate choice to link the President’s birthday with remembrance of the country’s history.

“September is a significant month,” Namyalo told journalists ahead of the gathering. She referred to it in Luganda as *omwezi omulamuzi*, a period associated with judgment and divine intervention, and noted its personal importance as the month of the President’s birth. The event, themed around the “Spiritual Revival of Our Fallen Warriors,” brought together leaders from different denominations, living veterans and relatives of those who died in the struggle.

Among those highlighted in the lead-up to the day was Lt Gen Ivan Koreta, one of the pioneering officers linked to the liberation effort. His journey included training with FRELIMO in Mozambique, participation in the 1979 war against Idi Amin, and command of the 13th Battalion during the final stages of the 1981–86 bush war. Organisers presented such living veterans as a tangible link to a chapter that continues to shape the nation.

Elsewhere, birthday messages poured in from the First Family. Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba was among the first to post publicly, calling his father “the greatest black man that God ever created” and wishing him many more years. First Lady Janet Museveni offered a reflective note of thanksgiving, while daughter Natasha Museveni Karugire shared a message centred on faith and family.

The Kyambogo gathering forms part of wider birthday activities this year. A larger public celebration is planned for 19 September at Kololo Independence Grounds under the theme “The Legacy That Inspires Generations.”

Highlights

  • – Special prayers and commemorations at ONC headquarters in Kyambogo focused on honouring fallen and living liberation fighters.
  • – Religious leaders, veterans and families of those who died in the struggle attended the morning event.
  • – The occasion deliberately ties the President’s birthday to national memory and spiritual reflection.
  • – Family tributes from Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, First Lady Janet Museveni and Natasha Museveni Karugire added a personal note.
  • – A bigger public celebration is scheduled for 19 September at Kololo.

Key Takeaway

The day underscored a recurring pattern in recent years: Museveni’s birthday has become both a personal milestone and a moment for the ruling party’s structures, particularly the ONC and the Bazzukulu network, to reconnect with the history of the struggle. By pairing celebration with remembrance, organisers aimed to remind supporters that present achievements rest on earlier sacrifices. Whether the quieter Kyambogo prayers or the larger Kololo gathering draw bigger crowds, the focus remains on continuity — of leadership, of memory, and of the political project that began decades ago.
