The planned coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new Omukama of Tooro has been thrown into uncertainty after an emergency court application was filed seeking to stop Tuesday’s installation ceremony.

According to Daily Monitor, two Batooro, Derick Alitugabira and Juliet Kangume, together with Walezi Wa Katiba, have petitioned the Fort Portal High Court for an interim order suspending the coronation scheduled for September 29, 2026.

The applicants are challenging the selection of Prince Nyabongo, arguing that it allegedly contradicts the wishes of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. They claim the late king left a written will indicating that his son should succeed him, or, in his son’s absence, his cousin.

The petition also names former Queen Mother Best Kemigisa as a respondent. The applicants want her compelled to produce the alleged will and provide information concerning the heir they say was referred to by the late king.

The application comes just hours before the scheduled enthronement, with the High Court yet to hear or rule on the request. This leaves the status of Tuesday’s coronation pending the court’s decision.

Meanwhile, preparations for the ceremony have been continuing in Fort Portal, with thousands expected to participate in events leading up to the formal coronation at Karuziika Palace. President Yoweri Museveni is also expected to attend as chief guest.
