Cameroon Awaits Government Reshuffle as 93-Year-Old Paul Biya Faces Succession Questions

Cameroonians are awaiting a government reshuffle and the appointment of a vice-president as President Paul Biya faces growing questions about political succession following his return from a prolonged stay in Switzerland.

Cameroon is awaiting major political changes after President Paul Biya returned to the country in August following more than 10 weeks abroad in Geneva, Switzerland.

The 93-year-old leader returned to Yaoundé on August 20, 2026, ending his longest recorded absence from the country since taking power in 1982. His extended stay abroad had fuelled speculation about his health and raised questions about the country’s leadership and political stability. (Reuters)

However, nearly two months after his return, expectations of significant changes in government remain largely unmet.

In a report published on October 17, Al Jazeera said Cameroonians were still waiting for a new government to be appointed, despite Biya’s earlier promise that a new administration would be formed in the coming days. The vice-presidency, restored through a constitutional amendment in April, also remained vacant. (Al Jazeera)

Succession Questions Grow

The absence of a vice-president has become a major subject of debate, particularly given Biya’s advanced age and the importance of establishing a clear succession process.

Under a constitutional amendment promulgated in April 2026, the president may appoint a vice-president who would assume the presidency on an interim basis if the office becomes vacant because of death, resignation or permanent incapacity.

However, the position remained unfilled as of October 17, leaving uncertainty over who would take charge in the event that Biya could no longer perform his duties. (Al Jazeera)

Opposition figures and governance observers have called for greater clarity over the country’s political future, arguing that the appointment would help address concerns about continuity of leadership.

Biya’s Long Stay in Switzerland

Biya left Cameroon on June 7, 2026, accompanied by his wife, Chantal Biya, for what the presidency described as a brief private stay in Europe.

His prolonged absence prompted widespread speculation about his health and ability to govern, although government officials maintained that he remained capable of carrying out his presidential responsibilities.

His return in August was welcomed by supporters of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, but it did not immediately resolve questions surrounding the formation of a new government or the vacant vice-presidency. (Reuters)

Economic and Political Implications

The uncertainty surrounding the country’s leadership comes as Cameroon continues to face security challenges, including separatist violence in its English-speaking regions and an armed insurgency linked to Boko Haram in the Lake Chad Basin.

Analysts have also warned that prolonged uncertainty over political succession could undermine investor confidence and complicate governance in a country where power has remained highly centralised around the presidency. (AP News)

Biya has led Cameroon since 1982 and began his eighth presidential term in November 2025 following a disputed election.

As public expectations grow, attention remains focused on whether the veteran leader will announce a new government, appoint a vice-president or introduce other measures to address concerns about political continuity.

For now, Cameroon’s political future remains a subject of intense public interest as the country awaits decisions from one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders
