One suspected attacker has died and four others have been arrested following an early-morning attack on Bugoye Sub-county Police Station in Kasese District.
The incident occurred at around 2:00am on Thursday, October 1, 2026, when a group of about six people armed with pangas reportedly stormed the police station and attempted to seize a firearm from an officer on duty.
According to Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the officer resisted the attempt and shot one of the attackers in the leg.
The wounded suspect reportedly fled the scene but was later found dead a few metres from the police station. His identity had not yet been established by police.
Four suspects were arrested in connection with the attack. They were identified as Simon Irumba, Abson Kiiza, George Kadama and Lenaxi Baluku.
Police recovered a panga from the scene, while the deceased’s body was taken to a mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack, identify the motive and trace the suspects who escaped.
Rusoke urged members of the public with information about the whereabouts of the fleeing suspects to report to the nearest police station.
“Police remain alert and prepared to respond promptly to attacks on police facilities,” Rusoke said.
Police have not yet disclosed whether the suspects had previously been linked to any criminal activity or what may have motivated the attempted seizure of the officer’s firearm.
