Portugal captain Bruno Fernandes has expressed his hope that Cristiano Ronaldo will not walk away from the national team under the current circumstances, insisting the legendary forward deserves a proper farewell.
Fernandes spoke warmly about Ronaldo while reflecting on the veteran’s future with Portugal, saying that if the time eventually comes for him to retire from international football, it should be marked by a celebration worthy of his contribution to the country.
“I hope Cristiano does not leave the national team… and when or if he wants, it should be on a beautiful day to celebrate Cristiano; not like this,” Fernandes told B24.
The Manchester United midfielder described Ronaldo as much more than a teammate, highlighting his enormous influence on Portuguese football and his status as a national icon.
“He deserves the best. Cristiano is the biggest icon of our football, our country,” Fernandes added.
Ronaldo has spent more than two decades representing Portugal and has become synonymous with the national team. His international career has been defined by major tournament appearances, goals and a long list of records.
For Fernandes, Ronaldo’s eventual departure should therefore be treated as a moment to celebrate an extraordinary career rather than an abrupt ending.
