Two Ships Sink Near Strait of Hormuz Amid Surge in Attacks on Commercial Vessels

Two commercial vessels have sunk near the Strait of Hormuz after being struck by projectiles in separate incidents, raising fresh concerns about maritime security and global oil supplies amid escalating tensions involving Iran and the United States.

The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank after sustaining damage and catching fire while sailing through the strategic waterway, maritime officials said on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

According to Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority, all 21 crew members aboard the vessel were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported.

The vessel, which had a capacity of approximately 2,824 twenty-foot equivalent units, was reportedly struck on Tuesday before the damage led to a fire and its eventual sinking.

Second Vessel Also Sinks

In a separate incident, the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged dry bulk carrier Cape Dao sank near the Strait of Hormuz weeks after being struck by a projectile on September 23.

Maritime sources reported that one crew member was killed in the earlier attack, while the remaining crew members were evacuated.

The incidents add to growing concerns about the safety of commercial vessels navigating the region, where attacks on shipping have increased over the past 10 days.

Iran-US Tensions Escalate

The latest maritime incidents come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States following a US blockade of Iranian ports and the introduction of tougher sanctions.

Iran has said it is intensifying attacks in response to the measures, increasing uncertainty over the security of shipping routes around the Gulf.

However, responsibility for each individual projectile attack should be established through verified investigations rather than assumed.

Global Oil Supplies at Risk

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

A substantial share of global oil shipments passes through the narrow waterway, making it particularly vulnerable to disruptions caused by military conflict and attacks on commercial shipping.

Continued insecurity could increase shipping insurance premiums, raise transportation costs and disrupt oil deliveries to international markets.

Such disruptions could also place additional pressure on fuel prices and inflation in countries that depend heavily on imported petroleum products.

Oil markets remained sensitive to developments in the Middle East on Thursday, October 15, with Brent crude trading at approximately $104.42 per barrel, according to Reuters.

Concerns Over Maritime Safety

The sinking of the two vessels highlights the growing risks facing commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

Maritime authorities have raised concerns about attacks on civilian vessels, warning that such incidents threaten the safety of seafarers and the movement of goods through a critical international trade corridor.

With tensions between Washington and Tehran continuing, further attacks could deepen uncertainty over shipping operations and global energy supplies.

The situation remains a major concern for international shipping and energy markets as governments and maritime authorities monitor developments around the strategic waterway.
