Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has reportedly been rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital in critical condition, according to his former deputy, Doreen Nyanjura Omutatina.
Nyanjura announced the development on October 19, 2026, although she did not disclose what triggered the emergency or provide details about Lukwago’s current treatment.
The latest development comes amid longstanding concerns about the opposition politician’s health, following recurring complications involving his breathing, spine and pain around the site of an earlier operation.
A medical assessment reported in July recommended that Lukwago return to his spine surgeons in India for further evaluation after specialists identified persistent upper limb radiculitis and reduced strength in his left arm.
The assessment also indicated that doctors had deferred another magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan because they could not confirm whether an artificial disc implanted during his earlier spinal surgery was compatible with the available scanners.
The concern centred on the safety of the implanted device rather than the availability of MRI equipment.
Lukwago’s health condition has previously featured in legal arguments concerning whether he could receive adequate medical treatment while on remand.
A lawyer by profession, Lukwago represented Kampala Central in Parliament from 2006 to 2011 before becoming Kampala Lord Mayor, a position he held for three terms.
As of October 19, no further details had been provided about the circumstances surrounding his reported hospital admission.
