Church Urges Tooro King To Honour Marriage Vows As Succession Questions Emerge.

The Church of Uganda has called on Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I to remain faithful to his marriage vows as discussions surrounding his family and the future succession of the Tooro Kingdom continue to attract attention.

Speaking during a prayer service at St John’s Cathedral ahead of Tuesday’s coronation, Rwenzori Bishop Reuben Bizarwenda Kisembo reminded the new King that, as an Anglican and Christian leader, he is expected to uphold the principle of monogamy.

Bishop Kisembo urged the King to honour the vows he made before God and remain committed to his wife throughout their marriage, noting that polygamy can present challenges.

The remarks come amid questions over the succession status of the King’s children with Queen Rebecca Amoding, who comes from the Iteso community outside Tooro.

Although the Babiito Royal Clan recognises Rebecca as the King’s wife and says her background does not affect her position as Queen, questions have been raised over whether her children can inherit the throne.

Babiito Clan spokesman Rev. Fr. Dr. Charles Oyo has said that, under the clan’s succession understanding, an heir must be born to a mother from one of Tooro’s recognised clans.

The issue adds another layer to the discussions surrounding the newly installed monarch as he prepares to formally take the throne.
