Cristiano Ronaldo has given a detailed account of his decision to leave Portugal’s national-team camp, saying the move followed a breakdown in trust between him and head coach Jorge Jesus.
In a lengthy statement, Ronaldo said he had initially agreed with the coach on a plan for his involvement with the national team. He claims the coach later told him he would play 30 minutes against Norway after he had recovered sufficiently from the previous match.
According to Ronaldo, he warmed up and waited throughout the second half but was never called upon. He described this as the second time the coach had failed to keep his word, prompting him to leave the camp rather than wait for another broken promise.

Ronaldo acknowledged that leaving the camp was wrong and apologised to his teammates, the Portuguese people and supporters who may have travelled to watch him. However, he maintained that the decision was driven by what he described as a serious breach of trust.
The Portugal captain also rejected suggestions that his future with the national team should be reduced to a farewell appearance. He said that, provided he is fit and available after serving any punishment, he intends to continue representing Portugal and competing to win.
