Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo will miss Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid after picking up injuries in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
The Red Devils travel to the Spanish capital for their second Champions League fixture, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 BST.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Carrick revealed that both players had failed to recover in time for the European encounter.
“They’ve not travelled. They both picked up issues in the game on Saturday against Spurs, and we were working through that to see what that looks like. At the moment, they are not ready for the game tomorrow,” Carrick said.
However, United have received a boost with defender Matthijs de Ligt travelling with the squad after a period on the sidelines.
Young defender Dan Armer has also joined the travelling party, giving him an opportunity to experience the build-up to a major European fixture.
“We’ve had a little bit of patience with him, working through that and working hard to get to this stage. He’s had a long journey, so we’re delighted to have him back,” Carrick said of De Ligt.
United will also be without Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Noussair Mazraoui, Manuel Ugarte and Benjamin Šeško, who remain sidelined through injuries.
Meanwhile, Matheus Cunha could feature against his former club, Atletico Madrid, adding another intriguing storyline to the encounter. Marcus Rashford also has experience against the Spanish side from his loan spell at Barcelona last season.
Amad is another player Carrick can count on after making his first appearance of the campaign in the draw against Tottenham.
The clash presents another major test for United as they look to build momentum in Europe following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Sabah in their opening Champions League fixture at Old Trafford.
With Shaw and Mainoo unavailable, Carrick will need to assess his options carefully as United prepare to face Atletico Madrid on their home ground.
