NUP’s Olivia Lutaaya Welcomed Back After Latest Detention

Olivia Lutaaya

National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter Olivia Lutaaya has reportedly been released from detention, drawing a message of welcome from the opposition party’s leadership.

In a statement welcoming her back, an NUP leader expressed pleasure at her return, describing her as a committed party supporter who has endured years of detention because of her political beliefs.

According to the statement, Lutaaya has spent approximately five of the six years since the formation of NUP in detention at different times over charges the party considers politically motivated.

Despite what the party describes as prolonged persecution, Lutaaya is said to remain steadfast in her commitment to the ideals she believes in and the struggle for a better Uganda.

Her detention history dates back to the 2020–2021 election period. She was previously among NUP supporters who spent several years in custody before receiving a presidential pardon in November 2024.

However, she was arrested again in November 2025 and charged alongside other opposition supporters over alleged participation in unauthorised military-style drills at the NUP headquarters. She denied the charges.

Her latest reported release has been welcomed by party supporters, with the NUP leadership reaffirming its message of resilience and continued commitment to political change.

“Welcome back comrade! Uganda will be free,” the statement concluded.
