Uganda’s music industry is mourning the loss of Moses Matovu, the veteran singer, saxophonist and longtime leader of Afrigo Band, who died on September 24, 2026, at the age of 77.

Known to many fans as “Papa Moi,” Matovu leaves behind a musical legacy that stretches across nearly six decades and helped shape Uganda’s live music scene.

Born in Kawempe on June 19, 1949, Matovu entered professional music in 1967. Before fully committing himself to music, he had also shown promise as a footballer, playing for several clubs. His musical journey later took him through the Police Band and Cranes Band before he became one of the key figures behind the formation of Afrigo Band in 1975.

For five decades, Matovu remained at the heart of Afrigo Band, building a reputation not only as a talented saxophonist and vocalist but also as a bandleader, composer and mentor to younger generations of musicians.

Afrigo Band, widely regarded as Uganda’s longest-serving music group, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025, with Matovu still actively associated with the institution he helped build.

His death came after he sustained serious injuries in an attack in Kibuli, Kampala. Police opened a murder investigation, with detectives working to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and identify those responsible.

By the end of September 24, police had announced the arrest of a suspect as investigations continued.

Matovu’s death marks the end of an era for Ugandan live music. His contribution went beyond the songs he performed; he helped preserve the culture of live band music while influencing musicians who came after him.
