The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has asked the Electoral Commission to reserve the proposed name, colours, symbol and slogan of its planned political party ahead of registration.
The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political pressure group, has moved to establish its identity as a political party by seeking approval from the Electoral Commission (EC) to reserve its proposed name and other identifying features.
In a letter dated October 9, 2026, the group’s acting chief promoter, Cankara Moses Mwaka, asked EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama to reserve the identity of the proposed Patriotic League of Uganda Movement (PLUM).
According to Mwaka, the application was made under Sections 6 and 7 of the Political Parties and Organisations Act, which provide for the reservation of a proposed political party’s identity before registration.
The group has proposed a handshake symbol, representing people shaking hands, alongside the colours orange, white and blue.
“The name is Patriotic League of Uganda Movement. Then the symbol is handshake, shaking hands, the colour is orange, white and then blue,” Mwaka said.
He added that the group intends to register as a political party rather than operate as a civic organisation.
Electoral Commission Yet to Comment
Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said he could not comment on the application because he had not received a copy of the letter.
The proposed reservation is an initial step towards establishing the group’s political identity, although the request does not in itself confirm that the party has been registered.
Political Implications
Political analyst and governance consultant Henry Kasacca described the move as overdue, saying PLU was a product of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The planned transition from a political pressure group to a registered political party could mark a new phase in PLU’s political activities, depending on the outcome of its application and the subsequent registration process.
For now, the group awaits the Electoral Commission’s response to its request to reserve the proposed name, symbol and colours of the Patriotic League of Uganda Movement.
