Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director Nyombi Thembo has vowed to double his financial support for singer Nina Roz’s upcoming concert after condemning attacks against the musician over her alleged political affiliations.
Thembo made the pledge after Nina Roz, whose real name is Nina Kankunda, visited his office to discuss preparations for her upcoming Sound of a Dream concert, scheduled for December 11, 2026, at the Hockey Grounds in Lugogo, Kampala.
The UCC boss criticised supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) for attacking the singer over her engagement with him, describing the backlash as an example of political intolerance that should have no place in Uganda’s entertainment industry.
In response, Thembo pledged to purchase two tables for the concert instead of one, doubling his planned support for the event.
He argued that political differences should not prevent artists and industry stakeholders from working together, stressing that musicians should be free to pursue professional opportunities regardless of their political affiliations.
Thembo pointed to his previous interactions with opposition-leaning musicians, including King Saha, Mathias Walukagga, Mapeesa and Omukunja Atasera, as examples of his willingness to engage with artists across the political divide.
He explained that his role as UCC Executive Director requires him to work with people from different political backgrounds as part of the commission’s responsibilities in regulating and engaging with Uganda’s communications and broadcasting sectors.
The UCC boss also drew a distinction between his official duties and his political involvement in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
Nina Roz has publicly been associated with NUP, the political party led by Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
Thembo’s pledge adds a political dimension to the build-up to the singer’s December concert, while reigniting debate over whether political loyalties should influence professional relationships in Uganda’s entertainment industry.
