Highlights
  • Attorney General Sam Mayanja has cleared preparations for the new Omukama’s coronation.
  • Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo I is set to take over the Tooro throne.
  • Mayanja says no evidence has been presented proving that late King Oyo left an heir.

Attorney General Sam Mayanja has cleared the way for preparations to continue for the coronation of Tooro’s new Omukama, Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo I, despite an ongoing dispute over the succession of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

Mayanja said the parties challenging the coronation had failed to provide evidence demonstrating that the late King Oyo left behind an heir who would take over the throne.

The Attorney General’s position comes amid growing disagreement within the Tooro royal establishment over who should succeed the late monarch, who died aged 34 while receiving medical care in the United States.

The succession dispute has placed members of the Babiito royal family and other stakeholders at odds, with questions being raised over the rightful heir and the procedures that should guide the transition of the Tooro throne.

Despite the disagreement, preparations for the enthronement of Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo I are moving forward, with the coronation expected to mark a new chapter for the kingdom.

TAKEAWAY

The Attorney General’s clearance gives the planned coronation a legal boost, but the succession dispute remains a sensitive issue within Tooro Kingdom. The question of whether King Oyo left an heir could continue to shape discussions surrounding the kingdom’s leadership and the legitimacy of the transition.
