A prosecution witness in the treason case against opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye has told court that Besigye described Lutale as his “second in command,” bringing the opposition activist’s name into the ongoing high-profile trial.

According to the witness, Besigye allegedly regarded Lutale as a key figure within his political operations and trusted him with responsibilities close to the opposition leader.
The court also heard claims concerning National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine. The witness reportedly described Besigye’s view of Bobi Wine as someone who was “not serious” politically and alleged that he was surrounded by government agents or spies.

The testimony further alleged that Bobi Wine’s political survival and continued prominence within the opposition had, in part, been aided by the presence of individuals within his circles who were allegedly linked to the government.
The claims remain part of prosecution evidence presented in court and have not, by themselves, established the allegations as fact. The accused persons remain entitled to the presumption of innocence until the court reaches a final determination.
The testimony is likely to attract renewed attention within Uganda’s opposition politics, particularly given the longstanding differences and competition among opposition actors.
