Ugandan events promoter Norbert Twizire, popularly known as Nobat Events, has finally spoken out following his release from prison, claiming his arrest was politically motivated and linked to his appointment as the National Coordinator of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
Nobat, who spent approximately one and a half months on remand, believes his appointment to the PLU position angered certain individuals who allegedly wanted to damage his reputation and use his name to divert attention from other issues.
Speaking after his release, the promoter also addressed the controversial SACCO funds saga, which led to his arrest. He maintained that his organisation had nothing to hide and insisted that the money received was distributed to the intended beneficiaries.
According to Nobat, out of the Shs10 billion reportedly provided by President Yoweri Museveni to support music promoters, his SACCO received only Shs1 billion, while two other SACCOs received Shs4.5 billion each.
He claims disagreements surrounding the distribution of the funds contributed to efforts to have him arrested, despite his insistence that members had received their respective shares.
Nobat also weighed in on Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja’s involvement in the matter, saying he does not blame her for his arrest because she was carrying out her official duties.
However, he believes she should have first listened to his side of the story before taking action that eventually led to his detention.
The promoter has now revealed plans to formally write to Nabbanja, requesting a meeting where he hopes to personally explain his position regarding the SACCO controversy.
His remarks come as the legal battle surrounding the management of the promoters’ SACCO funds continues to attract attention within Uganda’s entertainment industry.
The allegations against Nobat remain subject to court determination.
