Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has claimed that security forces recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from a home belonging to demoted soldier Peter Elweru in the Teso sub-region, warning that he could be declared a rebel if he fails to surrender.
In a post shared on his official X account on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Muhoozi alleged that Elweru had been stockpiling weapons at one of his homes in Teso.

“Some of the arms ‘Private Elweru’ was stockpiling at one of his homes in Teso. We have recovered a lot of arms and ammunition from his house,” Muhoozi wrote.
The army chief issued a fresh warning, saying Elweru had only hours to surrender before authorities would declare him a rebel and take action against him.
“He has hours to surrender before we declare him a rebel and deal with him accordingly,” he added.
The latest claims come days after Muhoozi announced that Elweru had been stripped of his military ranks and demoted to the rank of Private. He also claimed that more than 20 soldiers who had been serving under Elweru had been arrested.
However, key details surrounding the alleged weapons recovery remain unclear. The specific types and quantities of weapons seized, Elweru’s current whereabouts and the circumstances of the operation have not been independently established.
The developments mark a further escalation in the situation surrounding the former senior officer, with attention now turning to whether Elweru will respond to the ultimatum and whether security authorities will provide further details.
