Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar.
The First Gentleman died at 8:00 a.m. local time on Monday at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition, according to Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi, who announced his death.
Ndejembi conveyed condolences to President Samia, Ameir’s family and friends, while confirming that funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, a village in Zanzibar.
A LIFE AWAY FROM THE SPOTLIGHT
Unlike many spouses of political leaders, Ameir maintained a notably low public profile. He rarely appeared alongside President Samia at official functions and generally stayed away from the political limelight.
Ameir was an agricultural academic and had been married to Samia since 1978, long before she entered national politics.
When Samia became Tanzania’s president in 2021, following the death of President John Magufuli, Ameir became the country’s first First Gentleman.
The couple had four children together — three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is also involved in politics and serves in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.

REGIONAL TRIBUTES
News of Ameir’s death has drawn condolences from across the region.
Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his sorrow, saying President Samia had lost a lifelong companion, while describing Ameir as a distinguished son of Tanzania.
The death marks a deeply personal loss for President Samia, who had been married to Ameir for nearly five decades.
