FORT PORTAL, UGANDA — The Tooro Kingdom is mourning the death of its monarch, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, according to an official announcement by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.
The announcement came only hours after the Kingdom had appealed to the public to pray for the 34-year-old King, who had earlier been confirmed to be in critical condition.
In a statement, Rwomiire announced the death with a message of grief, describing it as an “immeasurable loss” to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and Uganda.
He called on the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful as the Kingdom enters a period of mourning.
Crown succession assured
The Prime Minister also addressed what will happen to the Tooro throne following the King’s death.
According to the statement, King Oyo leaves behind a Prince who will be his heir. However, the identity of the Prince will be formally revealed at an appropriate time, in line with the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom.
“The continuity of the Crown is assured,” Rwomiire said.
Further details concerning the funeral and mourning arrangements are expected to be communicated in an official statement.
A reign that began at just three years old
King Oyo ascended the Tooro throne in September 1995 following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
At only three years old, he became the 13th ruler of the Tooro Kingdom and went on to spend more than three decades on the throne. His coronation as a child attracted international attention, with Oyo becoming widely known as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
His reign later saw him take on a more active role in the affairs of the Kingdom, with his royal platform associated with issues including youth empowerment, education, health, agriculture and cultural preservation.
The Kingdom now enters mourning
King Oyo’s death comes at the end of a day of uncertainty in Tooro, after conflicting reports about his condition circulated publicly.
The Kingdom initially urged the public to disregard unverified reports and pray for the monarch after confirming that he was critically ill. The later announcement from the Prime Minister has now formally confirmed his death.
The focus now turns to the official mourning programme, funeral arrangements and the traditional process surrounding the succession of the Tooro Crown.
