KAMPALA, UGANDA — October 6, 2026 — The Office of the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has called on Ugandans to use the country’s 64th Independence Anniversary to celebrate Uganda while reflecting on the meaning of independence.

Uganda gained political independence from British colonial rule on October 9, 1962. However, the ONC says the country did not immediately enjoy lasting peace, security and stability, instead experiencing political crises, military coups, dictatorship and prolonged armed conflicts.

In a press release issued on October 6, the Office of the National Chairman highlighted the role of the National Resistance Movement and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in what it describes as Uganda’s journey toward peace, stability and national reconstruction.

The statement argues that when President Museveni assumed power in 1986, he inherited a country heavily affected by years of conflict and political instability.

According to the ONC, the NRM’s vision was focused on restoring peace and security, rebuilding institutions and creating conditions for Ugandans to meaningfully enjoy the independence attained in 1962.

“1962 gave Uganda political independence, but the NRM under President Museveni gave that independence a stronger foundation of peace, stability and national reconstruction,” the statement says.

The ONC further emphasised that political independence alone cannot be fully enjoyed without peace, security and stability.

The statement identifies Pan-Africanism, democracy and socio-economic transformation among the principles and areas highlighted in the NRM’s vision for Uganda.

As the country prepares to mark 64 years of independence on October 9, the ONC urged Ugandans to celebrate the nation’s achievements while reflecting on the country’s history and future.
