Uganda’s political landscape is already beginning to take shape ahead of the 2031 general elections, with the People’s Liberation Union (PLU) stepping up efforts to endorse General Muhoozi Kainerugaba as its presidential candidate.
On Monday, September 7, 2026, PLU members and supporters gathered at the party headquarters to sign nomination endorsement forms in support of Gen Muhoozi’s anticipated presidential bid.

Among those seen participating in the signature exercise were prominent Ugandan businessmen and tycoons Sudhir Ruparelia and Godfrey Kirumira, whose presence at the party offices added significant attention to the exercise.

The signature collection is part of PLU’s efforts to demonstrate grassroots and political support for Gen Muhoozi ahead of the 2031 presidential race.
Gen Muhoozi, the Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has previously been at the centre of growing political discussions surrounding Uganda’s future leadership, with his supporters openly backing his ambitions.
The participation of high-profile business figures such as Ruparelia and Kirumira is likely to fuel further discussion about the growing political alliances and networks that could shape the 2031 elections.
With the 2031 election still several years away, today’s endorsement exercise signals that political preparations and mobilisation are already gaining momentum.
